Many test prep courses and tutoring sessions focus on providing you with cheats that are intended to help you “outsmart” the test, but most of these are unreliable and many are simply wrong. The only way to beat the GMAT, GRE, or SAT is to understand the material and to be able to answer the questions.
MY APPROACH IS TO TEACH YOU THE CONCEPTS AND SKILLS YOU NEED TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS CORRECTLY.
I will teach you the math you need to do the math portion of each test, the grammar, correct English, and reasoning skills you need to do the verbal portion, and the analytical skills and concepts you need for both. I will teach you how to read and unravel the questions, and I will teach you how to manage your time to maximize your score. I will teach you how to go to the core of the various question types while avoiding the traps that the tests set for you, and I will show you how to determine what you are expected to do in each case.
I will also help you prepare for the Integrated Reasoning (GMAT only) and Analytical Writing (GRE only) sections.
I will give you constructive strategies and insights to help you approach the questions systematically and in the most efficient way possible, using valid, mathematically sound tips and shortcuts to simplify the questions. I will not just offer you a collection of highly questionable cheats that give you a slightly better than one-in-five chance of guessing the answer.
How my tutoring sessions work
I offer sessions both in person and online. Please note that, while many people are skeptical of online test-prep tutoring, it has in fact proven to be very effective, and every person who has given it a try with me has chosen to continue with it, with no exceptions!
A structured approach to test prep
For those who need a complete review of the math, I can review all the math topics that appear on the test with you, thoroughly and systematically. I generally start with the major topics that appear throughout the test, and then move on to the smaller topics. We will look at both the basic math itself, and its application to test questions. I will also show you basic arithmetic strategies that will improve your speed in doing calculations and in otherwise simplifying the questions, and I will alert you to the traps and tricks the tests like to set.
For those who need to improve their Verbal skills, I will work with you on understanding how the questions work and what the tests look for, as well as the traps they set in the Verbal questions. We will discuss the nature of Reading Comprehension answer choices as well as strategies for approaching the passages, consider basic principles of Critical Reasoning (GMAT) and Argument Structure (GRE), and examine various strategies for approaching Text Completion (GRE) and Sentence Equivalence (GRE). I will also help you understand what is required on the writing portion of the tests.
If you have been working on test problems, Math or Verbal, and just have specific questions you would like to ask, you can simply bring me the problems you are working on and we can go through them thoroughly.
In both Verbal and Math lessons, we will discuss strategies for understanding and tackling test questions and address the techniques the tests use to make questions seem more complicated than they really are. We will also go over essential Time Management strategies.
Many students choose to cover both Math and Verbal.
I can help those who need assistance with the Integrated Reasoning (GMAT) and Analytical Writing (GRE) sections as well.
I assist candidates with the preparation of their applications:
- Planning the content of essays
- Critiquing essays; final editing
- Organizing and editing the résumé
- Interview preparation
Virtually every student I’ve assisted with applications has been accepted at their first choice of school.
My fees for these services are at my regular tutoring rates, and are thus substantially lower than those charged by “consultancies”.
Testimonials
I want to say a big thank you to you for helping me with the math – I’ve had a number of tutors and I think that you were by far the most helpful, both with the actual math but also with strategy and encouragement. My little sister is planning to apply to business school within the coming year, so she will be in touch regarding lessons in the future.
